The Engineering Specialist provides an advanced level of expertise in field problem/customer service resolution.  Knowledgeable in and consults internally on UL standards, requirements, and certifications.  Works with associated business units to offer quality improvements and minimize production costs to sustain a competitive advantage in the air movement and control industry.  Works closely with marketing/sales on new product concepts, features and/or special design requests (SDR's.)

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

Business Unit field problem responsibilities:

  • Chairing a monthly Field Problem meeting and providing / maintaining minutes.
  • Overseeing and coordinating entire field problem process, including tasks such as communicating with appropriate parties, determining who at GFC will be handling the particular field problem, and ensuring reports are completed and filed.
  • Ensuring Business Unit representatives have the necessary training do adequately perform field problems.
  • Visiting job sites as necessary to review installation, update Instruction & Operation Manuals, and make recommendations to resolve the situation and prevent future occurrences.
  • Responsible for developing field problem reporting mechanism for each business unit, tracking issues such as metrics, trend analysis, and other related data analytics.
  • Negotiating and approving back charges from contractors/reps for field service/warranty work.
  • Reviewing/evaluating returned goods and determining root cause failures and disposition of materials.
  • Providing technical expertise and consultation to internal sales and marketing personnel and external customers.

 

Applicable industry standards responsibilities:

  • Possess or develop a working knowledge of applicable standards used in air moving products (exhaust and ventilation), including UL, SASO, IEC, AMCA, and CSA standards and their associated requirements; also including, but not limited to, approving invoices and certification.
  • Be the Business Unit representative on the UL Standards Technical Panel UL 705/507 Committee and be a Voting member.
  • Meet and work with the UL field representative during their quarterly inspections at GFC.

 

Other responsibilities:

  • Provide monthly product updates and recommendations for improvements derived from carious field problems to Business Units for consideration, in order to continually improve the cost efficiency, design, and manufacturing processes.
  • Work with sales and marketing personnel on new product ideas, features and/or special design requests (SDR's.)
  • May have indirect supervision over multiple design teams.
  • May provide mentoring/training via lunch and learns to Business Unit field problem designees.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

         This position allows, and requires, frequent application of independent judgment.  Ideal candidates will have knowledge and expertise in the following subject areas:  electrical motor control circuits, controls, machine design, product development, project management, UL Standards, testing, quality control, and processes and project management.  Candidates should also have good customer service skills to facilitate troubleshooting with Reps/customers as necessary.  Some travel will be necessary.

Job Qualifications:

          Work requires a professional level of knowledge in a specialized field, which is equivalent to that which would be acquired by completing a regular four-year college program.  Alternately, a two-year degree in an engineering discipline with two additional years of experience will be considered.  Minimum 5-10 years of experience is required.
