General Summary:

The Controls Engineer shall work closely with sales, marketing, design engineering, and manufacturing to improve processes, implement testing procedures, and drive operational efficiency with regards to electrical designs and DDC controls programming for air handling products.


Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop new controls product designs and redesigns in coordination with sales, marketing and manufacturing functions.  Ensure products meet control design functionality of required points of operation and project design intent.
  • Identify controls strategies for optimal use of product applications.  Review, clarify, and validate deliverables to both internal and external customers.
  • Develop bill of materials and translation documents related to new or changed designs.
  • Support and/or manage the transition from design into production, including any necessary testing and training required for implementing new or changed designs. May also be required to evaluate equipment and facility capabilities when assessing the cost effectiveness of a new design.
  • Identify product defects and assist with product quality improvements through hardware and software design and/or functionality changes.
  • Provide technical support via phone and e-mail for both internal and external sales people including the areas of product selection and application.
  • Support management in their negotiations with internal and external customers on matters including warranties.
  • May develop and communicate solutions for challenging applications in compliance with industry codes and standards.
  • Provide content for the development and updating of product literature.
  • Gather information on competitive product offerings.
  • Work directly on field projects, including programming and commissioning for resolution of field application problems.
  • Organize and present training seminars internally and externally.
  • Provide technical consultation internally to sales and marketing personnel and externally to customers.
  • Attend trade shows. Plan and coordinate display exhibits.
  • Responsible for identifying key selling points.
  • Write specifications to clarify and validate deliverables to both internal and external customers.
  • Maintain accurate and current documentation on design changes and requests.
  • Assist in development of start-up and commissioning procedures.
  • Support and/or manage the prototyping and testing of new designs, including the interpretation of test results.  May be required to set up and run equipment in house or on the job site.
  • Develop technical and applications expertise for assigned products and general knowledge of all other related control products.
  • Evaluate material selection, cost analysis, and vendors as required to implement new designs.  Review, along with purchasing personnel, the selection and specification of new purchased component parts for product designs.
  • Collaborate with the shop floor and listen to their ideas and opportunities.  Identify, prioritize, and implement short and long term corrective actions.  
  • Visit job sites to review installation and/or design problems and resolve the situation.
  • Lead/facilitate in value engineering projects.
  • Review/evaluate returned goods and determine root cause of failures and disposition of materials.
  • May have direct reports and provide mentoring for employees. May also have indirect supervision over a design team(s).


Job Qualifications

Work requires a professional level of knowledge in a specialized field, which is equivalent to that which would be acquired by completing a regular four-year college program in an Engineering Discipline.

Between 3-5 years of related work experience is required.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects in accordance with predetermined completion dates.
  • Experience with with PLC and ladder logic or block programming tools is required.  Tools such as ProBuilder (Lynxspring), 1Tool (Carel), etc. is a plus.
  • Experience with building management system protocols such as BACnet, LonTalk, Modbus is a plus.
  • Microsoft Office Suite experience required.
  • HVAC or building management systems experience is preferred.
