General Summary: 
Greenheck Group is adding a Principal Engineer of Automation to our Manufacturing Excellence team. The Principal Engineer of Automation will provide an advanced level of expertise in the design, redesign, development, automation, and integration of new and existing Greenheck equipment to improve our manufacturing operations and service to our customers. 

 

The Principal Engineer of Automation will play a critical role within the company as a technical expert and consultant influencing the automation direction throughout our operations and business teams. This role will also need to collaborate and influence with our external automation partners to achieve our goals as a company. The main areas of responsibilities will include providing expertise on our machine automation team, engaging, and leading the team and BU’s in the next level of automation initiatives, and management of the development of design, construction, and sourcing for proprietary solutions.

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Create, manage, and maintain equipment standards for the Greenheck Group Automation and Machine Development Center. 
  • Support Manufacturing Engineers during the start of a project to help making decisions on everything pertaining to automation and integration of the project. Including direction to engineers, designers, and drafters, ensuring on-time completion of project requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, and update tools (RFQ, Safety Sign Offs, Stage Gate sign off, Supplier Vetting etc.)
  • Maintain knowledge of manufacturing automation processes to improve Greenheck’s competitive position.Establish/Maintain external supplier base for custom engineering automation projects.
  • Consulting with BU’s on automation projects (analytical and providing ideology on development and integration for projects).
  • Drive R&D and proof of concept projects for Manufacturing Excellence Center robot lab.
  • Create and maintain Gant Charts for projects. 
  • Visit equipment trade shows (e.g. Automatika, IMTS etc.) to keep competitive advantage among air movement and control industry as well as advancements in robotics and automation. 
  • Visit/Vet possible automation vendors (integrators, robot, and equipment manufacturers)
  • Maintain and help utilize Automation Project Management tools for Greenheck Group.
  • Support Manufacturing Engineers during automation projects and help with critical decisions (evaluate material selection, cost analysis, and vendors as required to implement new designs).
  • Schedule/Attend meetings and engage in all large automation initiatives.
  • Lead initiative to change the culture of the organization to invest more time on project scope to speed up large automation projects, while positively impacting vendor relations by limiting problems that lengthen the automation project timeline.
  • Lead multi-day pitstops that are not concurrent to allow for personal reflection and problem digestion to define scope.  
  • Engage with vendors during project management to define scope of work. 
  • Assist in completion and submission of clear RFQ with attached details of parts and strategy of the automation.Assist in writing quote and ROI for project proposals to BU’s.
  • Display excellent communication skills with external contacts, other departments, and employees within the area, both verbally and in written communications and documentation.
  • Evaluate material selection, cost analysis, and vendors as required to implement new designs.
  • Oversee the prototyping and testing of new designs, including interpretation of test results.
  • Evaluate internal tooling and facility capabilities when assessing the cost effectiveness of a new design.
  • Maintain accurate and current documentation on design changes and requests.
  • Resolve production and/or field problems as needed. 

 
Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in a manufacturing specifically related to robotics, automation, or integration. Experience with a configure-to-order or make-to-order environment is a plus.
  • Individual must exhibit strong leadership skills. The person must initiate action with internal and external partners to set, align on, and successfully implement agreed upon strategies and achieve expected outcomes.
  • Must be a decision-maker, willing to take calculated risks and have the ability to take advantage of business opportunities as they arise. 
  • Ability to interact and communicate with a broad array of people, functions, and locations is paramount to success. The ability to forge strong working relationships and successfully interact with operational functions, business areas, external partners, and employees, and senior management is critical.
  • Able to identify and implement both near-term and long-term improvements and strategies
  • Experience with lean manufacturing
  • Willingness to travel to regional locations; both domestic and international
  • Negotiation skills to create win-win partnerships with outside vendors
  • Strong communication, presentation, and collaboration skills
